Canada edges Women's Select 18s
CALGARY, Alta. - Amanda Pelkey (Montpelier, Vt.) gave Team USA a 1-0 lead, but the U.S. Women's Under-18 Select Team fell to Canada, 3-1, in the final game of the 2009 Women's Under-18 Series Thursday. Canada won two of the three meetings.
"I thought this was the best game we played," said Katie King, head coach of the U.S. Women's Under-18 Select Team. "I'm very happy with the players and we'll be able to learn a few things as we move toward (the International Ice Hockey Federation World Women's Under-18 Championship in) March."
After receiving a back-door feed from Meagan Mangene (Manorville, N.Y.), Brooke Ammerman (River Vale, N.J.) sent a pass through the crease that Pelkey backhanded over the goaltender's glove for a power-play goal at 9:32 of the first period.
Erin Ambrose tied the score for Canada with a power-play marker at 9:29 of the second period. At 3:07 of the third period, Christine Bestland gave Canada a 2-1 advantage before Jessica Campbell added an empty-net goal with 1:06 remaining.
U.S. netminder Alex Rigsby (Delafield, Wis.) turned aside 19 shots in the contest.
