Two former Cal Selects make Women's National Team
Ruggiero, a Harvard grad who played with the Cal Selects, has skated for the U.S. in every Olympics since women’s hockey was added to the Winter Games in 1998. She has won gold, silver and bronze at the Olympics and is just one of two players to be on all three Olympic teams thus far along with Jenny Potter.Ruggiero is joined by another former Cal Selects player, defenseman Kerry Weiland of Alaska. Weiland played college hockey at the University of Wisconsin and will be playing under her former Badgers coach Mark Johnson.
Forty-one players were invited to the National camp and 23 were chosen for the final roster. The team will go on a 10-game Qwest Tour before the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, starting with a Sept. 25 game against the WCHA (Western Collegiate Hockey Association) All-Stars.
"Although this is a tough day, it's also an exciting day," Johnson told USAhockey.com. "We put a lot of time, energy and thought into the selection of this team and we ended up with a great mix of experienced Olympic veterans, as well as players who are looking to compete in the Games for the first time. This process started three years ago and the experience the players have gained during that time will help them in our preparations as we move toward Vancouver."
The team’s athletic trainer will be Jill Radzinski of Davis.
